PTA HAPPENINGS– January 31 – February 6, 2020

ABC/25 GET BURBED CHALLENGE: Registration is open for the 9th Annual ABC/25 Get Burbed Challenge on April 25, 2020! Choose the 5K or 1 mile and walk or run with friends and neighbors who are coming together to raise funds for the ABC/25 Foundation. All proceeds are put directly back into our schools and classrooms through teacher grants for innovative teaching methods and materials. Register by March 22nd to receive early registration perks including a $5 discount on the entry fee, a guaranteed race t-shirt and the option to have your race packet delivered to your D25 school. PTA NOMINATING COMMITTEE: We are in search of several people to serve on our nominating committee, which will be forming soon. Nominating committee is elected for the sole purpose of seeking qualified individuals to be the nominee for each office to be filled in the upcoming year. The time commitment for this committee is very flexible, so it’s a great opportunity to get involved.  We need 3 people who are current committee chairs, one person who is a PTA member, but not on a committee, and 2 alternates. If you are interested please contact Caroleen Guiwargis (cguiwargis@yahoo.com) and Jennifer Sadowski (jenjen5757@aol.com).

FUN FAIR: Fun fair is coming to Ivy Hill!!  Please mark your calendars for Friday, February 21 from 5:30-8:00 pm. Wristbands will be sold for $12 in advance and $15 at the door. Paperwork to purchase the wristbands were sent home last week.

DEADLINE EXTENDED – SIX FLAGS – READ TO SUCCEED: Students need to read 6 hours (homework assignments not included) and keep a log of reading titles and minutes read to earn a FREE Six Flags Great America one day pass for the 2020 summer season (these can also be used to purchase a Season Pass for a discount).  Using the code sent home by the teacher, complete the online eReading log, by Saturday, February 1st, 2020 (there are no paper forms to send back this year).  Personalized day passes will be issued and set home in May.  Additionally, if students read more than 6 hours they may be eligible for Extra Rewards this year.  Once these are determined by Six Flags, you will be able to see them in the Rewards area of the online site.  You must attend Ivy Hill to be part of our program.   For questions, contact Nikki Wolverton (nicholewolverton@yahoo.com) or Louann Benbow (benbowunit@gmail.com).  Please contact your student’s teacher if you need the code as each classroom has its own.

LUNCHTIME READERS-VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: We still need a few volunteers!! Lunchtime Readers starts January 21st and takes place during recess Tuesday’s through Friday’s (this is only a six week program).  Volunteers don’t need to commit for the entire time. Even if you can only be there some days, or some weeks, only 2-3 days total, we could still use your help. The program is for kids in 3rd grade thru 5th grade, but parents of a younger child (K-2) can also volunteer. If you are interested in volunteering or have any questions, please reach out to Meghann VanderBaan ( meg@mkvanderbaan.com )and/or Suzanne Krause (svkrause@hotmail.com ).

CHESS CLUB: Calling all chess enthusiasts in grades 1-5! Chess Club will be held during lunch recess each Monday starting with an informational session in the LMC on Monday, January 13. Play will begin on January 27 and continue each Monday through March 16 during lunch recess and will take place in the Gym – participation each week is voluntary. No chess experience is necessary. If you want to sign up your child or volunteer, please sign up here. Questions, email Julie Soderna (julie@soderna.com).

SIX FLAGS – READ TO SUCCEED is back!  Think summer, sun and splashing at Great America next summer!  Students need to read 6 hours (homework assignments not included) and keep a log of reading titles and minutes read to earn a FREE Six Flags Great America one day pass for the 2020 summer season (these can also be used to purchase a Season Pass for a discount).   NEW THIS YEAR – parents/guardians will need to register their student(s) for the program on-line using a Teacher Specific Code, which will be sent home soon, if you haven’t received it already.  Then, complete the online eReading log, by Tuesday, January 21st, 2020 (there are no paper forms to send back this year).  Personalized day passes will be issued and set home in May.  Additionally, if students read more than 6 hours they may be eligible for Extra Rewards this year.  Once these are determined by Six Flags, you will be able to see them in the Rewards area of the online site.  You must attend Ivy Hill to be part of our program.  For questions, contact Nikki Wolverton (nicholewolverton@yahoo.com) or Louann Benbow (benbowunit@gmail.com).

I-FIVES GO TO:

  • Kari Rosczyk, Katie Hacias, Joelle Vena, Mr Kaese, Mrs. Jimenez, Ivy’s Maintenance Team, and to all of our volunteers who helped make our first Winter Wonderland possible. The Winter Wonderland event was a great success this year. These events cannot happen without the help of you, the community of Ivy Hill. As a Board we would like to thank all those individuals who took time to come out and volunteer their time.
  • Michelle Derochowski for organizing our holiday lights drive and to everyone who donated.
  • Julie Soderna for organizing our coat and mitten drive and to all of the families who donated items.
